The Importance of Stretching

It is important to always undertake a warm up stretch prior to exercise. Stretching is necessary to loosen up your limbs and muscles, and is the safest way to protect your muscles, ligaments and tendons from injury when you perform your work out.

Failure to stretch before exercising may lead to sluggish performance. You may also feel sore at the end of your workout due to the sudden forceful movements your body was not prepared for. Sprains and strains may result.

Stretching should be gradual, slow and sustained for best effects. Do not stretch quickly, as this can create strong muscle contractions which increases tension. Each stretch should be held for about 30 - 40 seconds.

To lengthen muscles and gain flexibility, try to combine breathing techniques as you stretch. Inhale to statically hold the stretch position and exhaling as you deepen the stretch. Always stop at any point of pain whilst stretching; it's the bodies warning signal before any damage is done.
